FRICTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PAVEMENT SURFACES

THE RESEARCH HAS BEEN DIRECTED TOWARDS ESTABLISHING THE LEVEL AND RATE OF CHANGE OF PAVEMENT SURFACE FRICTION ON TEN SECTIONS OF ROADS IN THE STATE. FRICTION MEASUREMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE BY THE STOPPING DISTANCE AND DECELEROMETER METHODS AT SPEEDS RANGING FROM 30 TO 60 MPH. THE TEST SECTIONS WERE SAMPLED WITH 6-INCH DIAMETER BITS AND THE CORES WERE EVALUATED FOR LABORATORY FRICTION MEASUREMENTS AND SURFACE ASPERITY WITH A PROFILOGRAPH. RESULTS FROM THE TWO-YEAR TESTING PERIOD SHOW THAT PAVEMENT FRICTION WAS RELATIVELY HIGH AND WILL REMAIN AT THIS LEVEL BECAUSE THE AGGREGATES ARE NOT SUSCEPTIBLE TO POLISHING. DECELEROMETER MEASUREMENTS WERE NOT FOUND TO BE ADEQUATE FOR ESTABLISHING A RELIABLE VALUE OF SURFACE FRICTION, AS A CONSEQUENCE, MOST COMPARISONS WILL BE MADE WITH STOPPING DISTANCE NUMBERS. BECAUSE OF THE UNPREDICTABILITY OF VEHICLE BEHAVIOR UPON THE SUDDEN APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES AT HIGH SPEED, A 2-WHEEL DIAGONAL BRAKING PROCEDURE WAS INVESTIGATED AND FOUND TO YIELD ACCEPTABLE FRICTION VALUES. THE COMPARISON OF LABORATORY FRICTION VALUES WITH FIELD MEASUREMENTS OF FRICTION INDICATED A VERY POOR DEGREE OF CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TWO VALUES. EXAMINATION OF VARIOUS CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SURFACE PROFILOGRAPHS INDICATED THAT THE MOST MEANINGFUL FEATURE WAS THE AVERAGE HEIGHT OF THE SURFACE ASPERITIES. COMPARISONS OF ASPERITY HEIGHT AND STOPPING DISTANCE NUMBER SHOWED AN OPTIMUM HEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 1.25 MILLIMETERS /AUTHOR/
