THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION OF INCIPIENT WASH-BOARDING OF EARTH ROADS

A LINEAR THEORY ON INCIPIENT WASHBOARDING OF EARTH ROADS IS SET FORTH. THE FUNCTION DEFINING THE CHANGE IN VERTICAL ELONGATION ARISING FROM THE PASSAGE OF A WHEEL AND RELATIVE TO THE LONGITUDINAL ABSCISSA IS DERIVED ACCORDING TO THAT THEORY. THE EFFECT OF A LARGE NUMBER OF RUNS ON THE SAME TRAJECTORY IS EXAMINED AND TALLIED ACCORDING TO THE LENGTH OF THE OBSERVED WAVES, THE PATH OF THE WAVES AND THE EXTENSION OF THE PHENOMENON BOTH FORWARD AND BACK. THEN ONE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VEHICLE IS CHANGED FROM ONE VEHICLE TO THE NEXT IN RELATION TO THE AXIS OF THE ROAD AND SIMILAR RESULTS ARE OBTAINED. THIS ACCOUNTS FOR THE LATERAL EXTENSION OF THE PHENOMENON.
