FINAL SUMMARY- BASIC PROPERTIES OF SEAL COATS AND SURFACE TREATMENTS

THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE WAS TO OBTAIN INFORMATION THAT COULD ASSIST IN EVALUATIONS OF THE STRENGTH, DURABILITY, AND THICKNESS OF THE BITUMINOUS FILMS, AND PROPER GRADES AND TYPES OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS AS RELATED TO THE SIZE AND TYPE OF AGGREGATE FOR SEAL COAT AND SURFACE TREATMENT CONSTRUCTION. ACTUALLY, NO INVESTIGATIONS OF DURABILITY OF BITUMINOUS FILMS HAVE BEEN REPORTED, NOR WERE THERE ANY DETAILED EVALUATIONS OF LIQUID BITUMINOUS MATERIALS - EMULSIONS AND CUTBACKS - WHICH ARE WIDELY USED IN SEAL COAT AND SURFACE TREATMENT CONSTRUCTION. A BIBLIOGRAPHY WAS DEVELOPED (AND PUBLISHED) TO PROVIDE A REVIEW OF THE STATE OF THE ART OF SEAL COAT AND SURFACE TREATMENT DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TO 1967. IT INCLUDED ANNOTATED REFERENCES TO ARTICLES PERTAINING TO THE SUBJECT AND A SUMMARY OF EXISTING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES. A BASIC STUDY OF PAVING GRADE ASPHALT CEMENTS PROVIDED INSIGHTS INTO FACTORS AFFECTING THE BEHAVIOR OF THESE BINDERS IN THIN FILMS UNDER SHEAR AND TENSILE STRESSES. THE INFORMATION OBTAINED CAN BE USED FOR JUDGEMENT CONCERNING PROPER TYPE AND/OR GRADE OF BITUMINOUS MATERIAL. THIN FILMS OF BINDER ARE ESSENTIAL FOR HIGH TENSILE STRENGTH, BUT NO DATA HAVE BEEN PROVIDED ON BINDER TYPES OTHER THAN ASPHALT CEMENTS AND NO OPTIMUM FILM THICKNESSES HAVE BEEN PROPOSED. /AUTHOR/
