A SIMPLIFIED PAVEMENT DESIGN

A LONG AND THOROUGH STUDY OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF A WIDE RANGE OF SOILS AND THEIR PAVEMENT DESIGN COVERAGE REQUIREMENTS HAS ENABLED THE AUTHOR TO DEVISE A CHART FROM WHICH BEARING VALUES AND DESIGN COVERAGES CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE RESULTS OF SIMPLE SOIL TESTS. SOIL GROUPS WERE TESTED FOR COMPACTION, EXPANSION, GRADING AND INDEX, AND STONE ABSORPTION. ASSIGNED VALUES WERE GIVEN IN CHARTS FOR: (1) NUMBER VEHICLES/DAYS (TRAFFIC), (2) AMOUNT OF RAINFALL, (3) NATURAL DRAINAGE, AND (4) CONSTRUCTION CONDITION. THE ASSIGNED VALUES FROM EACH GROUP ARE ADDED TOGETHER TO GIVE THE TOTAL ASSIGNED VALUE. FROM THIS, A SIMPLIFIED PAVEMENT DESIGN CHART WAS DESIGNED SHOWING TRAFFIC AND RAINFALL CONDITIONS. OTHER CHARTS INCLUDE THE MECHANICAL FACTOR, COVERAGE FACTOR, EXPANSION AND PLASTICITY INDEX.
