STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF NONRIGID PAVEMENTS

THIS IS THE SECOND IN A SERIES OF PROGRESS REPORTS, THE FIRST OF WHICH WAS PRESENTED AT THE HRB ANNUAL MEETING IN 1946. THE COOPERATIVE PROJECT IS BEING SPONSORED BY HRB, THE ASPHALT INSTITUTE, AND THE PUBLIC ROADS ADMINISTRATION. FOUR MAIN PAVEMENT SECTIONS ARE BEING TESTED, WITH BASE COURSES OF 6, 12, 18, AND 24 INCHES OVER SOIL EMBANKMENTS COMPACTED TO 95% STANDARD AASHO MAXIMUM DENSITY. THE SURFACE COMPRISES TWO 10-FOOT SHOULDERS, ADJACENT 16-FOOT MOVING-LOAD TEST LANES WITH A 3-INCH DEPTH, AND A 12-FOOT STATIC-LOAD TEST LANE IN THE CENTER THAT HAS A SURFACE VARYING FROM 6 INCHES DEEP AT EITHER END TO 9 INCHES IN THE CENTER. TO DATE, ALL OF THE BEARING TESTS HAVE BEEN MADE WITH RIGID PLATES. DURING THE SUMMER OF 1947 ABOUT 60 PLATE LOADING TESTS WERE MADE BY AN INCREMENTAL REPETITIVE PROCEDURE DESCRIBED IN THE TEXT. CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO AN ACCELERATED LOAD-TESTING PROCEDURE INVOLVING CONTINUOUS LOAD APPLICATIONS UNTIL THE RESISTANCE OF THE MATERIAL IS OVERCOME. THE RATE OF LOAD APPLICATION WAS CONTROLLED TO PRODUCE A CONSTANT RATE OF DEFLECTION. THIS PROCEDURE CUT TO TWO MINUTES THE TIME FOR A SINGLE TEST. THE TEST EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. IN ADDITION, SPECIAL SUBGRADE BEARING TESTS WERE RUN WHOSE PROCEDURE IS DESCRIBED.
