ECONOMICAL DESIGN OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

STRESSES ARE CALCULATED FOR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENT SLABS SUBJECT TO A SINGLE WHEEL LOAD. RESULTS ARE PLOTTED IN THE FORM OF CHARTS THAT PROVIDE DESIGN VALUES OF PAVEMENT THICKNESS AND PRESTRESSING STRESS FOR ANY REASONABLE SLAB LENGTH, WHEN THE LOAD, TIRE PRESSURE, MODULUS OF SUBGRADE REACTION, AND COEFFICIENT OF SUBGRADE FRICTION ARE GIVEN. A SIMPLE COST EQUATION, USED WITH THE DESIGN CHARTS, ENABLES THE DESIGNER TO SELECT THE MOST ECONOMICAL PRESTRESSED PAVEMENT AND TO QUICKLY COMPARE ITS COST WITH THAT OF OTHER TYPES OF PAVEMENTS. /AUTHOR/
