DENSITY STUDIES OF ASPHALT CONCRETE

PREVIOUS STUDIES OF SURFACE COURSE DENSITY ARE EXTENDED TO ALL LAYERS OF AN ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENT. THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY WAS LIMITED TO SIX TEST SECTIONS FOR ONE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTED IN 1964. EACH LAYER OF THE PAVEMENT WAS CORED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING PLACEMENT AND ALSO AFTER CONSTRUCTION OF THE OVERLYING LAYERS. TEMPERATURES AT INTERFACES WERE MONITORED THROUGHOUT. IN ADDITION, PAVEMENT REBOUND DEFLECTIONS WERE DETERMINED WITH A BENKLEMAN BEAM AFTER EACH LAYER WAS PLACED. AFTER TWO YEARS IN SERVICE THE TEST SECTIONS WERE AGAIN CORED. BASED ON THE INVESTIGATION IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT (1) THERE ARE STATISTICAL DIFFERENCES IN DENSITY BETWEEN WHEELPATHS IN ALL LAYERS, THIS VARIATION BEING ATTRIBUTABLE TO NORMAL ROLLING PATTERNS; (2) THE DENSITY OF LOWER LAYERS IS INCREASED BY COMPACTING UPPER LAYERS; (3) ONCE THE FIRST 3-INCH LAYER OF BASE COURSE WAS PAVED THERE WAS LITTLE CHANGE IN MEAN REBOUND DEFLECTION; AND (4) AFTER TWO YEARS IN SERVICE THE DENSITY OF ALL LAYERS OF THE PAVEMENT HAS INCREASED. THE REPORT ALSO INCLUDED RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SPECIFIC GRAVITY DETERMINATIONS ON OPEN-GRADED BASE COURSE SAMPLES. /AUTHOR/
