A COOPERATIVE STUDY OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF NONRIGID PAVEMENTS: REVIEW OF TEST PROCEDURES AND PRESENTATION OF RIGID PLATE BEARING TEST DATA

A SUMMARY IS PRESENTED OF A COMPREHENSIVE INVESTIGATION OF THE STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR OF A PAVEMENT OF THE FLEXIBLE TYPE CONSTRUCTED UNDER CAREFULLY CONTROLLED CONDITIONS ON A UNIFORM COMPARATIVELY POOR SUBGRADE. A BRIEF REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE MATERIAL IN PREVIOUS REPORTS WITH EMPHASIS ON THE TEST METHODS AND PROCEDURES DEVELOPED. ALL LOADING TESTS REPORTED WERE MADE STATICALLY BY APPLYING KNOWN LOADS TO THE SURFACE, THE BASE SOURCE OR THE SUBGRADE, THROUGH RIGID STEEL CIRCULAR PLATES AND MEASURING THE RESULTING STRUCTURE. DESCRIPTION ARE PRESENTED TO: (2) A METHOD OF MEASURING DEFLECTIONS SIMULTANEOUSLY AT SEVERAL LEVELS IN THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE, (3) THE DETAILS OF THE TEST FACILITY, (4) THE LOAD TEST PROCEDURES DEVELOPED AND USED, (5) THE STATIC-LOAD TEST DATA, (6) DATA ON THE MATERIALS OF THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE AND SUBGRADE, AND (7) A SPECIAL STUDY OF TEMPERATURE AND MOISTURE CONDITIONS IN THE BASE AND SUBGRADE.
