DEVELOPMENT IN PAVEMENT DESIGN IN THE U.S.A-FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

PRESENT TRENDS IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN CONCEPTS ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENTS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS, TREATMENTS OF LOAD REPETITIONS, TOTAL SYSTEMS, ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS, THICKNESS EQUIVALENCY FACTORS AND FAILURE CRITERIA. CURRENT EMPHASIS ON PROVIDING FOR THE NEW GIANT AIRCRAFT IS RECOGNIZED, AND EFFECTS OF THE LARGE LOADS AND THE MANY WHEELED UNDERCARRIAGES ON FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS ARE INVESTIGATED. SOME PROMISING NEW DEVELOPMENTS, PAVEMENT COMPACTION, FAILURE CRITERIA, SKID RESISTANCE, QUALITY CONTROL, VIBRATORY TESTING, AND FATIGUE AT AIRCRAFT ROTATION POINTS ARE DISCUSSED. AREAS OF RESEARCH IN NEED OF ATTENTION ARE SUGGESTED. /TRRL/
