RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY THE "INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES APPLIQUEES DU BETON ARME" (I.R.A.B.A.) ON CONNECTOR BARS USED IN REINFORCED CONCRETE /IN FRENCH/

A SERIES OF INVESTIGATIONS ARE DESCRIBED AS FOLLOWS: (1) BOND (OR LAPPING) JOINT CONNECTOR BARS,-THE STRENGTH OF THE STEEL JOINTS DEPENDS MAINLY ON THE STRENGTH OF THE CONNECTORS AND THEIR SPACING; (2) THE ROLE OF STRAIGHT WEB REINFORCEMENT WHICH, ACCORDING TO REGULATIONS, MUST BE USED WITH BENT BARS IN BEAMS TO ENSURE SHEARING STRENGTH OF THE LATTER, (3) THE CONCEPT OF USING CONNECTOR BARS FOR PRODUCING BEAMS MEETING THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS: A VERY LIGHT DOUBLE T SECTIONS, POSSIBILITY OF PRODUCING PRECAST REINFORCEMENT IN SEPARATE ELEMENTS, POSIBILITY OF ASSEMBLING THE REINFORCEMENT BY SIMPLE JUXTAPOSITION OF THE PRECAST ELEMENTS, WITHOUT THREADING OR LOOPING; AND (4) THE DIFFERENT METHODS OF REINFORCING SHORT CONCRETE CORBELS IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES. TESTS SHOWED THAT THE USE OF CONNECTORS RESULTED IN A DECREASE IN THE BRITTLENESS OF CONCRETE CORBELS AND IN AN INCREASE IN STRENGTH OF VERY SHORT CORBELS. /LCPC/A/RRL/
