TORSIONAL STRENGTH OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE GIRDERS

TWO TEXAS HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT TYPE B PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE GIRDERS WERE TESTED TO DETERMINE THEIR TORSIONAL STRENGTH. APPLIED TORQUE, ANGLE OF TWIST AND STRAINS IN THE CONCRETE WERE DETERMINED. THE THEORETICAL STRENGTH AND TORQUE-ROTATION RELATIONSHIPS WERE CALCULATED BY CLASSICAL ELASTIC THEORY. EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL TORQUE-ROTATION RELATIONSHIPS WERE FOUND TO AGREE VERY CLOSELY. THE THEORETICAL TORSIONAL STRENGTH WAS ON THE AVERAGE ABOUT 75 PERCENT EXPERIMENTALLY DETERMINED TORSIONAL STRENGTH. /AUTHOR/
