STUDY ON THE VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS OF LONG SUSPENSION BRIDGE UNDER ERECTION

STUDIES WERE MADE ON THE VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS AND AERODYNAMIC STABILITY OF SUSPENSION BRIDGES. HOWEVER, IT IS NECESSARY TO INVESTIGATE THESE DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS IN THE ERECTION STAGE BECAUSE OF STRONG WINDS OR EARTHQUAKES DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PERIOD. INVESTIGATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT ON VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS OF A SUSPENSION BRIDGE. THE ERECTION PROCESS WAS DIVIDED INTO FIVE STAGES AND NATURAL FREQUENCIES OF THE BRIDGE AT EACH STAGE WERE CALCULATED BY REGARDING IT AS A SPACE FRAME STRUCTURE, TAKING INITIAL TENSION INTO CONSIDERATION. IN ORDER TO CONFIRM THE PROPRIETY OF THIS METHOD, A VIBRATION TEST WAS CONDUCTED WITH 1/150 SCALED MODEL AND THE EXPERIMENTAL VALUE WAS COMPARED WITH THE CALCULATED ONE. THE RESULTS PROVED THAT THEY WERE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH EACH OTHER. BY USING THIS METHOD, IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO KNOW THE CHANGES OF THE VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS OF A SUSPENSION BRIDGE UNDER ERECTION BEFOREHAND AND ALSO TO INVESTIGATE THE AERODYNAMIC STABILITY. /AUTHOR/
