EXPERIMENTAL BASIS FOR A DESIGN METHOD FOR RECTANGULAR REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS IN TORSION

THE PURPOSE IS TO OBTAIN (1) A RELIABLE ULTIMATE-LOAD METHOD OF DESIGNING RECTANGULAR REINFORCED CONCRETE SECTIONS IN TORSION COMBINED WITH BENDING AND SHEAR, AND (2) INFORMATION ON STIFFNESS AND CRACK WIDTH. PREVIOUS WORK ON RECTANGULAR REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS SUBJECTED TO COMBINED LOADING IS BRIEFLY REVIEWED. THE GENERAL FORM OF DESIGN RULES IS DISCUSSED AND A PARTICULAR FRAMEWORK OF REQUIREMENTS IS SUGGESTED. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF EXPERIMENTAL WORK UNDERTAKEN TO PROVIDE VALUES OF THE CONSTANTS IN THE DESIGN EQUATIONS AND TO DETERMINE THE LIMITS OF OVER-REINFORCEMENT. FINALLY A DESIGN METHOD IS FORMULATED AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ARE MADE. /AUTHOR/
