NEW ABRASION TESTING METHOD FOR AGGREGATES /IN RUSSIAN/

A VIBRATING CYLINDER, USED IN THE LABORATORY TO STUDY THE WEAR OF ROAD AGGREGATES, IS DESCRIBED. THE AGGREGATE PLACED IN A RIGID FORM IS SUBMITTED, BY MEANS OF A RUBBER PAD, TO PRESSURES AND VIBRATIONS, SIMILAR TO THOSE ON AN ACTUAL ROAD, THE FREQUENCY AND AMPLITUDE OF WHICH CAN BE ADJUSTED. TEST RESULTS ARE GIVEN. THE WEAR DETERMINED IN THIS VIBRATING CYLINDER IS COMPARABLE TO THAT OBTAINED BY THE DEVAL TEST. THE APPARATUS CAN BE USED TO OBTAIN INTERESTING RESULTS IN THE STUDY OF FROST-CRACKING OF MATERIALS. THE LOSS OF WEIGHT OBTAINED BY CLASSIC FREEZING-THAWING TESTS CARRIED OUT ON HARD AND SEMI-HARD LIMESTONE ARE, AFTER 100 CYCLES, ON THE SAME ORDER OF MAGNITUDE AS THE LOSS OF WEIGHT OBTAINED AFTER THE CYCLE OF TESTS MADE WITH THE DESIGNATED APPARATUS: ABSORPTION OF WATER FOR 48 HOURS, FREEZING AT -20 C FOR 4 HOURS, THAWING AT 20 C FOR 4 HOURS, THEN TESTING ON THE VIBRATING CYLINDER FOR 1 HOUR. /AUTHOR/
