UTILIZATION OF FLY-ASH AND CARBONIFEROUS SHALE IN THE NORTH AND PAS-DE-CALAIS COAL FIELDS

IMPORTANT TECHNICAL AND COMMERCIAL EFFORTS HAVE BEEN MADE OVER THE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS TO PUT THE VALUABLE USE INCREASING QUANTITIES OF BY-PRODUCTS OF THE COAL INDUSTRY. THE FIRST PART OF THIS ARTICLE DEALS WITH THE SALE OF ASHES, FROM POWER STATIONS WHICH ARE MAINLY UTILIZED IN HIGHWAY AND MOTORWAY EMBANKMENTS AND FOUNDATIONS, AND IN THE MANUFACTURE OF CEMENT. THE SECOND PART CONCERNS SHALE FROM COLLIERY WASTE-HEAPS WHICH CAN BE (1) SOLD WITH OR WITHOUT CALIBRATION, (2) MADE INTO BRICKS, AND (3) USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF EXPANDED AGGREGATES. THE LATTER USE REQUIRED THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIAL PROCESSES, DETAILS OF WHICH ARE GIVEN TOGETHER WITH THE ADVANTAGES AND FIELDS OF USE OF THE PRODUCTS OBTAINED. /TRRL/
