A NEW METHOD OF EVALUATING PARTICLE SHAPE AND SOME RESULTS OF ITS APPLICATION

A NEW METHOD OF DETERMINING PARTICLE SHAPE WAS DEVELOPED, WHICH WAS USED TO EXAMINE THE INFLUENCE OF THE PARTICLE SHAPE OF 8/12 SIZE CHIPPINGS ON SOME OF THE PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF UNBOUND STOCKPILES AND BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. THIS NEW METHOD USES THE VOIDS CONTENT OF THE CAREFULLY COMPACTED STOCKPILE OF CHIPPINGS AS A PARAMETER FOR THE PARTICLE SHAPE. BY MEANS OF THIS PARAMETER THE RELATION BETWEEN PARTICLE SHAPE AND IMPACT STRENGTH CAN BE QUANTIFIED, AND FOR THE FIRST TIME THE EXTRAORDINARY SENSITIVITY OF THE IMPACT VALUE OF THE CHIPPINGS TO SMALL CHANGES IN PARTICLE SIZE WAS REVEALED. THIS IS THOUGHT TO EXPLAIN PREVIOUS FAILURES TO CALIBRATE IMPACT EQUIPMENT. FIRST INVESTIGATIONS SHOWED THAT THE VOID CONTENT, BULK DENSITY AND STABILITY OF A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE HAVING AN 8/12 PARTICLE SIZE ARE NOT AFFECTED. HOWEVER, THE WEAR AND SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS IS MARKEDLY DETERMINED BY THE PARTICLE SHAPE. /TRRL/
