NEW ASPHALT MIXING METHOD CUTS EMISSIONS

A NEW MIXING METHOD BEING TRIED IN THE ASPHALT INDUSTRY MAY PROVIDE A SOLUTION TO THE POLLUTION PROBLEMS OF PAVING PRODUCTION. PRODUCERS HERE AND IN EUROPE HAVE EXPANDED THE CONCEPT OF THE USE OF THE DRYER TO HEAT AGGREGATES AND MIX THEM WITH BITUMINOUS MATERIALS TO INCLUDE PREPARATION OF MIXES USING PENETRATION GRADE ASPHALTS. THIS DEVELOPMENT, TOGETHER WITH RETENTION OF THE LOW-EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS, HAS PROMPTED A RAPID INCREASE IN USE AND INTEREST. IN THE NEW METHOD, DRYING, HEATING AND COATING OF AGGREGATES OCCUR SIMULTANEOUSLY WITHIN THE DRYER ITSELF. BESIDES SIMPLIFYING THE EMISSION PROBLEM, A NUMBER OF EARLY USERS FEEL THAT SIGNIFICANT PRODUCTION SAVINGS ARE POSSIBLE. /AUTHOR/
