FRICTION PROPERTIES OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE AND SURFACE TREATMENT

THIS REPORT DISCUSSES INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT BY THE VTI MECHANICAL AND SURFACING DEPARTMENTS INTO THE VARIATION IN FRICTION WITH SPEED, SEASON, AGE, TRAFFIC VOLUME, AIR TEMPERATURE, AND SITUATION (OPEN OR PROTECTED). FRICTION MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN DURING THE SPRING, SUMMER AND AUTUMN OF 1967 TO 1969 ON CERTAIN TEST SECTIONS SITUATED IN CENTRAL SWEDEN AND CHOSEN BY A SPECIAL METHOD. A MATHEMATICAL MODEL WAS DERIVED WHICH DESCRIBES THE DEPENDENCE OF THE FRICTION ON THE ABOVE VARIABLES. THE TEST ROAD SECTIONS WERE PAVED WITH ASPHALTIC CONCRETE, SURFACE TREATED, AND THE FRICTION MEASUREMENT VEHICLE BV5 OF THE INSTITUTE WAS USED.
