THE USE OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

MENTION IS MADE OF THE WIDE USE OF PETROLEUM BITUMEN AS BINDER IS SPAIN, COMPARED TO OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES IN WHICH BINDERS CONTAIN EQUAL PARTS OF BITUMEN AND TAR. THE SUPERIORITY OF BITUMEN OVER TAR RESIDES IN ITS RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES AND GREATER CHEMICAL INERTIA TO HEAT WHICH PREVENTS IT FROM AGEING AS QUICKLY. TAR, ON THE OTHER HAND, ADHERES TO AGGREGATES BETTER AND HAS A HIGHER RESISTANCE TO LUBRICANTS AND FUEL. TO REMEDY THESE DEFECTS, ADMIXTURES SUCH AS SYNTHETIC POLYMER RESINS CAN BE ADDED TO TAR, PITCH AND LAKE ASPHALT, SPECIAL FILLERS AND ASBESTOS TO BITUMEN. TO OBTAIN NON-SKID SURFACINGS, THE BINDER MUST HAVE SLIGHTLY AGED TO ENABLE THE SURFACE TO BECOME ROUGHER. EUROPEAN TECHNIQUES ARE REVIEWED REGARDING BITUMEN, TAR, BITUMEN-TAR MIXTURES, CUT-BACKS, ADMIXTURES, ETC. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE MANUFACTURE OF BINDERS BECOME MORE FLEXIBLE IN SPAIN. /LTE-LCPC-RRL/
