STUDY OF OPEN-GRADED AND CLOSE-GRADED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES CONTAINING AGGREGATES WHICH HAVE INADEQUATE ADHESION PROPERTIES

RESULTS ARE GIVEN OF A STUDY OF THE POSSIBILITY OF IMPROVING THE BEHAVIOR OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES CONTAINING ACID AGGREGATES IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER BY ADDING LIMESTONE FILLER. THIS METHOD WAS USED IN EXPERIMENTS ON A WEARING COURSE. RESULTS SHOW THAT (1) THE STABILITY OF THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURE INCREASES WITH THE PERCENTAGE OF LIMESTONE FILLER ADDED TO THE FRACTION GOING THROUGH THE NO. 4 ASTM SIEVE, (2) THE DENSITY INCREASES WITH THE ADDITION OF LIMESTONE FILLER, THEN BECOMES STABILIZED FROM AN ADDITION OF 50 PERCENT, AND (3) THE STRENGTH RETAINED DURING THE IMMERSION-COMPRESSION TEST INCREASES RAPIDLY WHEN SMALL PROPERTIONS OF LIMESTONE FILLER ARE ADDED, BUT BECOMES STABILIZED WHEN THE PERCENTAGE INCREASES. /IRRD-IRF/
