THE ADVANTAGES OF EXTERNAL STRAND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGES IN TERMS OF DESIGN, COST, ASSEMBLY AND MAINTENANCE ARE BRIEFLY OUTLINED, TOGETHER WITH DIFFICULTIES WHICH HAVE HAD TO BE SOLVED, PARTICULARLY CONCERNING PROTECTION OF THE CABLES, SHRINKAGE IN SLABS, AND FRICTION. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD IS DESCRIBED WITH REFERENCE TO THE NARROWS BRIDGE PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA, THE TASMAN BRIDGE IN HOBART (PRE-CAST T-BEAM BRIDGES), THE CALDER BRIDGE ON THE M1 (BOX GIRDER BRIDGE), BRAIDLEY ROAD BRIDGE, BOURNEMOUTH, AND FINALLY THE BECKTON ROAD FLYOVER IN LONDON. /TRRL/
