BRIDGES AND OTHER LARGE STRUCTURES

VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF WIND ON STRUCTURES ARE CONSIDERED: GUSTS AND DYNAMIC RESPONSES OF STRUCTURES SITUATED IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS, DYNAMICS OF GUSTS, EFFECT OF TURBULANCE ON FORCE COEFFICIENTS, AND FORCE COEFFICIENTS IN GENERAL. DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS FROM VARIOUS COUNTRIES ARE COMPARED AS REGARDS PROBABILITY OF GUST OCCURRENCE OF MAXIMUM WIND SPEED, WIND SPEED, SPEED VARIA- TION WITH HEIGHT, TOPOGRAPHY AND SHIELDING FACTORS, EFFECTS OF GUSTS, AND WIND AND TEMPERATURE. MENTION IS MADE OF THE REVISED U.K. SPECIFICATIONS FOR BRIDGES WHICH WILL BE BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF LINIET STATE DESIGN OF THE DYNAMIC WIND EFFECTS ON LONG SPAN BRIDGES, AND OF WIND TUNNELS AS TOOLS IN STRUCTURAL DESIGN. THE EFFECT OF STRUCTURES ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE ECONOMIC RETURN FROM BETTER KNOWLEDGE AND APPLICATION OF WIND EFFECTS ARE DISCUSSED. A LIST OF FUTURE RESEARCH TOPICS IS INCLUDED. /TRRL/
