AERODYNAMIC STUDIES OF THE VENTILATION OF ROAD TUNNELS

TRANSVERSE VENTILATION WAS SELECTED FOR THE TWO LARGE TUNNELS WHICH FORM PART OF THE TAUERN MOTORWAY IN AUSTRIA. TWO POSSIBLE WAYS OF INTRODUCING FRESH AIR WERE EXAMINED: 1 - THE NORMAL METHOD OF BLOWING IN AIR FROM TWO SIDES, AND 2 - THE BLOWING IN OF AIR DIRECTLY OVER THE CARRIAGEWAY FROM ONE SIDE ONLY. MODEL TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT AT THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF GRAZ WITH BOTH TYPES OF VENTILATION. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE SECOND METHOD WAS SIMPLER AND ALMOST AS EFFECTIVE AS THE FIRST. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE DESIGN AND EXECUTION OF THE AERODYNAMIC TESTS. /TRRL/
