INTERNATIONAL ROAD FEDERATION IN-DEPTH STUDY ON FATIGUE, FRACTURE AND STRESS CORROSION PROBLEMS OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES

AN IN-DEPTH STUDY TO INQUIRE INTO THE EXPERIENCE OF SIX WEST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES (ENGLAND, FRANCE, SWITZERLAND, GERMANY, BELGIUM, AND THE NETHERLANDS) WITH RESPECT TO FATIGUE, BRITTLE FRACTURE, AND STRESS CORROSION IN HIGHWAY BRIDGES WAS PROMPTED BY SEVERAL RECENT BRIDGE FAILURES IN THE UNITED STATES. PERSONAL INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED WITH BRIDGE ENGINEERS IN GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE PRACTICE, AS WELL AS WITH PERSONS ENGAGED IN THE TESTING OF MATERIALS AND THE TEACHING OF STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING. THE RESULTS ARE SUMMARIZED, AND THEIR APPLICABILITY IN THE UNITED STATES IS ASSESSED.
