SHEAR AND TORSION IN REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

THE INTERNAL FORCES AND THE CRITICAL LOADS IN REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS WITH STIRRUPS ARE STUDIED. THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOADING ARE EXAMINED INDIVIDUALLY: SIMULTANEOUS BENDING AND SHEAR, TORSION, AND SIMULTANEOUS TORSION, BENDING AND SHEAR. THE REPORT DEFINES THE CRITICAL LOAD AS THE LOAD WHICH CAUSES THE STIRRUPS TO YIELD. THE INTERNAL FORCES ARE ILLUSTRATED BY MEANS OF TRUSS MODELS IN WHICH THE INCLINATION OF THE COMPRESSION STRUTS IS NOT KNOWN. THIS IS DETERMINED BY THE ENERGY METHOD. COMPARISONS ARE MADE WITH TESTS, AND THESE APPEAR TO CONFIRM THAT THE ASSUMPTIONS MADE WITH REGARD TO THE INTERNAL FORCES ARE REASONABLE. COMPARISONS ARE ALSO MADE WITH ADDITIVE FORMULAE IN THE SWEDISH REGULATIONS FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES (B7 1968) AS REGARDS THE ABOVE-MENTIONED LOADS. A GOOD MEASURE OF AGREEMENT WAS HERE OBSERVED IN THE CASE OF BENDING AND SHEAR AND BENDING SHEAR COMBINED WITH TORSION. IN THE CASE OF TORSION ALONE THE STANDARDS WOULD SEEM TO YIELD VALUES WHICH ARE UNSAFE. A COMPARISON IS ALSO MADE FOR THE CASE OF PURE TORSION WITH THE LIMIT STATE METHOD, WHILE THIS METHOD IS ONLY COMMENTED ON FOR THE CASE OF COMBINED TORSION, BENDING, AND SHEAR. THE TORSIONAL STIFFNESS OF DIAGONALLY CRACKED BEAMS IS FINALLY STUDIED AND COMPARISONS ARE MADE WITH TESTS. /AUTHOR/
