FLUME EXPERIMENTS ON ALTERNATE BAR FORMATION

A SERIES OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS WERE PERFORMED TO DETERMINE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ALTERNATE BAR GEOMETRY, BED MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND HYDRAULIC PARAMETERS. THE EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED IN A RECIRCULATING LABORATORY FLUME 100 FT. LONG AND 3 FT. WIDE. THE FLUME HAD SMOOTH RIGID WALLS AND A MOVABLE BED. SAND, EXPANDED CLAY AGGREGATE AND PLASTIC PELLETS WERE USED AS BED MATERIALS. A LINEAR RELATIONSHIP EXISTED BETWEEN THE LOGARITHM OF THE DIMENSIONLESS PARAMETER DELTA S/D AND THE FROUDE NUMBER, WHERE DELTA IS THE MEANDERING WAVE LENGTH, S IS THE SLOPE AND D IS THE MEAN DEPTH. /ASCE/
