A CASE FOR PUMPING

THE ADVANTAGES OF USING CONCRETE PUMPS ARE DESCRIBED. CONCRETE MAY BE PUMPED VERTICALLY UP OR DOWN, OR HORIZONTALLY, WITHOUT INTERFERING WITH THE MACHINE OR THE CONDITION OF THE DELIVERED CONCRETE. PUMPING PERMITS POINT TO POINT DELIVERY. A CONCRETE PUMP WILL ELIMINATE SCAFFOLDING, BUGGY RUNS, HOISTS AND OTHER HAULING EQUIPMENT. HOWEVER, CONCRETE SHOULD NOT BE PUMPED IF THE WORK IS READILY ACCESSIBLE TO READY MIX TRUCKS. THE FOLLOWING FACTORS MATERIALLY EFFECT PUMPABILITY OF A CONCRETE MIX: (1) THE MAXIMUM SIZE, AMOUNT, AND GRADATION OF THE COARSE AGGREGATE, (2) THE AMOUNT AND GRADATION OF THE FINE AGGREGATE, AND (3) THE AMOUNT OF CEMENT USED IN THE MIX. THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF CONCRETE PUMPS ARE AVAILABLE: (1) THE SINGLE-OR DOUBLE-PISTON PUMCRETE MACHINE CAPABLE OF PUMPING EITHER 30 OR 60 CUBIC YARDS PER HOUR, (2) THE CONCRETE PLACER USING AIR PRESSURE TO PUSH THE CONCRETE THROUGH THE DELIVERY TUBE HAS A CAPACITY UP TO 35 CUBIC YARDS PER HOUR, AND THE MAXIMUM HORIZONTAL DELIVERY DISTANCE CLAIMED IS 1000 FEET, (3) A PUMP USING A RUBBER PUMPING TUBE AND ROLLERS LOCATED IN A VACUUM CHAMBER IN WHICH ROTATING ROLLERS SQUEEZE THE CONCRETE THROUGH THE PUMPING TUBE INTO AND THROUGH THE MATERIAL HOSE CAN PLACE CONCRETE AT RATES UP TO 60 CUBIC YARDS PER HOUR TO DISTANCES OF 400 FEET HORIZONTALLY AND 125 FEET VERTICALLY, AND (4) THE PUMP USING THE DUAL PISTON SYSTEM WHICH MAY BE EITHER HYDRAULICALLY OR MECHANICALLY DRIVEN, USING 3- OR 4-INCH DELIVERY LINES, AND CAN HANDLE UP TO ABOUT 35 CUBIC YARDS OF CONCRETE PER HOUR UP TO 500 FEET HORIZONTALLY AND 120 FEET VERTICALLY. WITH ANY OF THESE DESCRIBED PUMPS AND THE USE OF A PROPERLY DESIGNED CONCRETE MIX, PUMPING CAN BE A RELIABLE METHOD OF PLACING CONCRETE AT THE JOB SITE.
