AUTOMATIC BATCH PLANTS

THE EXPERIENCE OF NEW YORK STATE WITH AUTOMATIC BATCH PLANTS IS DISCUSSED. THE FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCED THE FORMULATION OF THE QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM WERE THE REQUIREMENT FOR DOCUMENTATION, AVAILABILITY OF NEW ENGINEERING AND EQUIPMENT TECHNOLOGY, AND THE LIMITATION OF INSPECTION MANPOWER. A RESEARCH PROGRAM WAS INITIATED TO FURNISH INFORMATION ON UNIFORMITY OF PRODUCTION, NEW SPECIFICATIONS AND PRODUCT CONTROL PROCEDURE, AND AUTOMATION AND RECORDING. CONSIDERATIONS COMMON TO ALL AUTOMATIC BATCH PLANTS ARE IDENTIFIED AS: (1) THE SCALE AND CONTROL SYSTEM, (2) THE INTERLOCKING OVER AND UNDERWEIGHT CONTROLS, AND (3) THE RECORDING. THE PLANTS HAVE PROVIDED MORE UNIFORM MIXTURES, BETTER PLANT CONTROL, REDUCED COSTS AND INCREASED PRODUCTION.
