CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS' EXPERIENCE WITH CPM

A BRIEF HISTORY IS PRESENTED OF THE USE OF THE CRITICAL PATH METHOD (CPM) BY CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS. TO DEVELOP AN INTEGRATED AND UNIFORM SYSTEM FOR THE HANDLING OF CPM PROJECTS, THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES WERE CONDUCTED: (1) DEVELOPMENT OF A PROJECT CONTROL SYSTEM TO FACILITATE USE OF CPM BY PROJECT PERSONNEL, (2) DEVELOPMENT OF SEVERAL SPECIAL COMPUTER PROGRAMS, (3) WRITING OF A COMPREHENSIVE MANUAL TO GUIDE PROJECT PERSONNEL, (4) DEVELOPMENT OF A TRAINING PROGRAM AND PREPARATION OF TRAINING COURSE MATERIAL, AND (5) PRESENTATION OF COURSES OF VARYING LENGTH AND CONTENT ON SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL THROUGHOUT THE COMPANY. THE FRAGMENTARY NETWORK APPROACH INCREASES THE CLARITY OF A PROJECT, MAKES IT MUCH EASIER TO PREPARE THE INITIAL PLAN, AND MAKES THE ARROW DIAGRAM MUCH MORE USEFUL BY KEEPING IT ON A SERIES OF STANDARD-SIZE DRAWINGS RATHER THAN ON ONE ENORMOUS SHEET. COLOR CODING WAS USED ON THE DIAGRAM TO SHOW THE CRITICAL PATH AND THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE PROJECT. FEATURES ARE DISCUSSED OF SEVERAL PROJECTS. CPM IS FOUND TO BE EQUALLY SUITED TO APPLICATION IN CONSTRUCTION OR RESEARCH, CORPORATE PLANNING OR SYSTEMS DESIGN, AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS. FOR THE FULL POTENTIAL OF CMP TO BE REALIZED IT SHOULD NOT BE RESTRICTED BY DEPARTMENTAL OR FUCTIONAL BARRIERS.
