MEASUREMENT OF PAVEMENT THICKNESS BY RAPID AND NONDESTRUCTIVE METHODS

THE FEASIBILITY IS INVESTIGATED OF VARIOUS ACOUSTIC (SONIC), NUCLEAR, AND ELECTRICAL TECHNIQUES FOR NONDESTRUCTIVE MEASUREMENT OF PORTLAND CEMENT AND BITUMINOUS CONCRETE PAVEMENT THICKNESS BOTH DURING AND AFTER CONSTRUCTION. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT AND FIELD TESTING OF THE FOLLOWING THREE SPECIFIC METHODS THAT COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN SUCH MEASUREMENTS WITH THE DESIRED DEGREE OF SPEED AND ACCURACY: (1) LARGE MOSAIC ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCERS (ESTIMATED ACCURACY PLUS OR MINUS TWO PERCENT) CAN BE USED ON ANY TYPE OF PAVEMENT UNDER ANY CONDITIONS, (2) THE SHORT MECHANICAL IMPULSE SOURCE WITH ULTRA-MICROMETER DETECTOR (ACCURACY PLUS OR MINUS TWO PERCENT) CAN BE USED ON ANY TYPE OF PAVEMENT IN THE HARDENED STATE, BUT DIFFICULTIES ARE ANTICIPATED IN ATTEMPTS TO APPLY IT INTO UNHARDENED CONCRETE, AND (3) SCATTERING OF RADIOACTIVE PELLETS PRIOR TO THE LAYING OF PAVEMENT (ACCURACY OF PLUS OR MINUS ONE PERCENT), WHICH CAN BE USED ON ANY TYPE OF PAVEMENT UNDER ANY CONDITIONS.
