THE USE OF NUCLEAR METERS IN SOILS INVESTIGATIONS: A SUMMARY OF WORLDWIDE RESEARCH AND PRACTICE

QUESTIONNAIRES CIRCULATED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD PROVIDED INFORMATION ON RESEARCH AND PRACTICE IN THE USE OF NUCLEAR METERS FOR MOISTURE AND DENSITY MEASUREMENTS IN SOILS. THE STUDY WAS SPONSORED BY COMMITTEE D-18 ON SOIL AND ROCK FOR ENGINEERING PURPOSES, AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS. INFORMATION WAS RECEIVED FROM EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS AND USERS OF THE EQUIPMENT IN GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, PRIVATE COMPANIES, AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE AGRICULTURAL, ENGINEERING, HYDROLOGIC, AND GEOLOGIC DISCIPLINES. THIS INFORMATION WAS RECEIVED FROM 13 FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND THE UNITED STATES. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE EQUIPMENT PRODUCED BY VARIOUS MANUFACTURERS, DISCUSSES HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE USE OF SUCH EQUIPMENT, AND DISCUSSES PROCEDURES FOLLOWED BY USERS IN APPLYING NUCLEAR METERS TO THE MEASUREMENT OF THE MOISTURE AND DENSITY OF ROCK AND SOIL MATERIALS. THE LIMITATIONS AND ACCURACY OF TEST RESULTS ARE DESCRIBED, RESEARCH INVOLVING USE OF NUCLEAR METERS IS SUMMARIZED, AND AN EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PUBLISHED LITERATURE IS PRESENTED. /ARTICLE/
