CONSTRUCTION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENT LENGTH ON N.H.2

THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF TWO 400-FT PRESTRESSED CONCRETE SLABS ARE DESCRIBED. UNDER ONE SLAB A 3/4-IN. LAYER OF FINE SAND LAID ON WATERBOUND MACADAM AND COVERED WITH WATERPROOF KRAFT PAPER WAS USED AS A FRICTION-REDUCING LAYER. A FLOTATION TECHNIQUE WAS USED WITH THE OTHER SLAB, CIRCULAR INFLATABLE RUBBER TUBES FOR FLOATING THE SLABS WERE PLACED BETWEEN THE SAND AND THE PAPER. COSTS OF BOTH TYPES ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF ORDINARY CONCRETE. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SLABS OVER A PERIOD OF 1 1/2 YEARS IS DESCRIBED. /RRL/
