RIVER-BED SCOUR

UNDERSTANDING OF FLOW IN ALLUVIAL CHANNELS IS POOR AND METHODS PROPOSED TO DATE FOR DETERMINING SAFE FOUNDATION DEPTHS ARE MAINLY EMPIRICAL. UNCERTAINTY CONCERNING SAFETY MARGINS LEADS NOT ONLY TO SOME UNSAFE FOUNDATIONS, AS DEMONSTRATED BY NOT INFREQUENT FAILURES, BUT PROBABLY ALSO TO SOME UNNECESSARILY COSTLY FOUNDATIONS. THIS REPORT REVIEWS PRESENT KNOWLEDGE ON THE PROBLEM AND SUMMARIZES AVAILABLE DESIGN PROCEDURES. SOME SCOURING CASE HISTORIES ARE PRESENTED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE PRESENTED ON BRIDGE LOCATION, BRIDGE LENGTH, TRAINING WORKS AND MODEL TESTS, DESIGN OF PIERS AGAINST LOCAL SCOUR, PIERSHAFT & FOUNDATION DETAILS & PROTECTION OF PIERS AGAINST LOCAL SCOUR. A METHOD OF MAKING & RECORDING FIELD OBSERVATIONS OF SCOUR BY ECHOSOUNDING IS PRESENTED.
