JOINTS IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES

SOME PROBLEMS OF JOINT SEALING ARE REVIEWED. THE LOCATION OF JOINTS AND SELECTION OF JOINT TYPE ARE DISCUSSED, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE STRESSES CAUSED BY SHRINKAGE, CREEP AND TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS TO WHICH JOINTS ARE SUBJECTED. A LIST OF CURRENTLY AVAILABLE SEALANT MATERIALS (NON-CURING TYPES AND ELASTOMERIC OR CURABLE SYNTHETIC RUBBER) IS PRESENTED. THE IMPORTANCE OF PREPARATION BEFORE APPLICATION OF THE SEALANT TO FACILITATE ADHESION IS STRESSED. JOINT FAILURE IS INVESTIGATED AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES PROPOSED. /RRL/
