ROAD TRANSITION CURVES FOR AN ACCELERATING VEHICLE

THE GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF ROAD CURVES IS DISUCSSED FOR SITUATIONS WHERE THE DESIGN VEHICLE CANNOT BE REGARDED AS TRAVELING AT A CONSTANT SPEED, SUCH AS ON APPROACH TO, OR EXIT FROM, A LOOP OF A GRADE SEPARATED INTERCHANGE. THE EQUATIONS OF TWO CURVES ARE GIVEN, THE FIRST OF CONSTANT RATE OR INCREASED OF RADIAL ACCELERATION, CORRESPONDING TO THE CLOTHOID IN CONSTANT-SPEED DESIGN, AND THE SECOND OF CONSTANT RADIAL ACCELERATION, WHICH THUS CORRESPONDS TO THE CIRCLE FOR CONSTANT SPEED. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE DESIGN VEHICLE HAS A CONSTANT ACCELERATION ALONG THE CURVE. AN EXAMPLE OF EACH CURVE IS TABULATED AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR THEIR USE IN PRACTICE. /AUTHOR/
