IRREGULARITIES OF THE FORMATION CAUSE VARYING SURFACE THICKNESS AND SETTLEMENTS DURING COMPACTION. THICK LAYERS THEREFORE NEED A PARTICULARLY HIGH INITIAL COMPACTION DURING APPLICATION, AS CAN BE ATTAINED USING COMBINED TAMPING VIBRATING BEAMS AND HEATED VIBRATING BEAMS (WITH TAMPING AMPLITUDE VARIABLE BETWEEN 2, 4 OR 7 MM, OR WITH ADJUSTABLE TAMPING AND VIBRATION FREQUENCY) - FOR EXAMPLE THE TITAN OF ABG. ACCORDINGLY 4-5 PASSES ARE SUFFICIENT WITH A HEAVY VIBRATORY ROLLER. ELECTRONIC LEVELLING DEVICES CAN EVEN MAINTAIN PERFECT CONTROL OVER GREATLY VARYING PLACEMENT THICKNESSES. /FG/RRL/
