THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CONCRETE SURFACING ON THE VIENNA-VILLACH MOTORWAY ON THE SECTION BETWEEN VIENNA AND VIENNA NEW TOWN /IN GERMAN/

THE 44.1-KM LONG CONSTRUCTION AREA WAS DIVIDED INTO 3 SURFACING CONTRACT SECTIONS. THE SUPPLYING OF AGGREGATE WAS CONFERRED SEPARATELY. IN ALL A SUPPLY OF 360,000 TONS WAS NECESSARY, SO THAT THERE WOULD BE A DAILY SUPPLY OF 4800 TONS FOR EACH OF THE ANTICIPATED 80 WORKING DAYS. THE UPPER LAYER OF THE TWO-COURSE CONCRETE SURFACING IS LAID FRESHLY ON THE LOWER COURSE. ANTICIPATED CONCRETE STRENGTHS: UPPER COURSE 400 LB PER SQ.CM, - LOWER COURSE 350 LB. PER SQ.C., FLEXURAL STRENGTH 55 LB. PER SQ.CM. SLABS WERE NORMALLY 8 M LONG BUT ONLY 6 M LONG BRIDGES TO AVOID CRACKING. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN EXPANSION JOINTS IS USUALLY 80 M, BUT CAN BE INCREASED TO 120 OR 140 M IN EVEN TEMPERATURES, OR BE REDUCED TO 40 M WHERE THERE ARE GREAT FLUCTUATIONS IN TEMPERATURE. EACH 11.25 M WIDE CARRIAGEWAY IS CONSTRUCTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE INNER 7.50 M WIDE TRAFFIC LANE IS BUILT FIRST, FOLLOWED BY THE 3.75 M WIDE OUTER LANE. AVERAGE DAILY CONSTRUCTION IS 415 M, MAXIMUM 470 M. IN A LABORATORY ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE THE IMPORTANT TESTS ON THE CONCRETE PRODUCED WERE CONSTANTLY BEING CARRIED OUT. IN ADDITION TO THE WORK DESCRIBED THE 3 CM THICK BITUMINOUS CARPET WITH A LOW ROADS CONTENT WAS APPLIED TO A 10-CM THICK BITUMEN GRAVEL LAYER ON SIDE ROADS, AND ASPHALTIC CONCRETE 7 CM THICK WAS LAID ON A 15 CM THICK BITUMEN GRAVEL LAYER AT ACCESS POINTS. /FG/RRL/
