NEW METHOD OF SEALING USED IN TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION IN SWITZERLAND (IN GERMAN)

A SOFT POLYVINYLCHLORIDE PLASTIC FOIL 1MM THICK WAS USED AS AN MEANS OF SEALING THE BLECHER TUNNEL, AS A WAVY SURFACE HAD BEEN LEFT AND SEALING HAD TO BE CARRIED OUT ON BOTH WET AND DRY SURFACES. THE FOIL HAD TO BE FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO ABSORB "MOVEMENT IN THE MOUNTAIN". BEFORE THE FOIL WAS USED NUMEROUS TESTS WERE UNDERTAKEN, AND THESE ARE DESCRIBED HERE. THEY CONSISTED OF FINDING METHODS OF STICKING THE FOIL TO THE TUNNEL WALLS. THE ONE MOST RECOMMENDED WAS THE SPRAYING OF THE ROCK WITH CONCRETE FOLLOWED BY A LAYER OF GRUNITE THE FOIL WAS USED. /FG/RRL/
