FASTER PILING BY RESONANT VIBRATION

THE OPERATING PRINCIPLE OF THE BODINE RESONANT PILE DRIVER IS BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. THE PILE DRIVER IMPARTS LARGE VIBRATORY FORCES TO THE STEEL PILE (OR CASING) AT A MUCH HIGHER FREQUENCY THAN IS USED WITH NORMAL VIBRATORY PILE DRIVING. BY MATCHING THE VIBRATION FREQUENCY TO THE NATURAL FREQUENCY OF THE PILE SYSTEM, A CONDITION OF RESONANCE IS ACHIEVED WHICH HAS THE EFFECT OF MULTIPLYING THE PEAK VIBRATORY FORCES WITHOUT INCREASING THE ACTUAL POWER INPUT TO THE SYSTEM. THESE FORCES ARE TRANSMITTED THROUGH THE PILE TO THE THIN LAYER OF EARTH IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING THE PILE, PUTTING IT INTO A STATE OF AGITATION AND MAKING IT BEHAVE MORE LIKE A FLUID THAN A SOLID. THE SKIN FRICTION BETWEEN THE PILE AND THE GROUND IS TEMPORARILY ALMOST DESTROYED, AND THE PILE SINKS SMOOTHLY AND QUICKLY INTO THE SOIL. /RRL/
