THE ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE

QUALITY CONTROL OF CONCRETE IS EFFECTED ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY BY PHYSICAL TESTS SUCH AS SLUMP TESTS AND CRUSHING STRENGTH TESTS. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF HARDENED CONCRETE HAS GAINED ONLY LIMITED ACCEPTANCE TO DATE, AND ALTHOUGH THERE IS A SPECIFIED METHOD OF ANALYSIS OF FRESHLY MADE CONCRETE (B.S. 1881 PART 4) THIS HAS, IN THE AUTHORS OPINIONS, SEVERAL SHORT COMINGS. THE FIRST PART OF THIS PAPER SEEKS TO SHOW THAT LABORATORY EXAMINATION OF HARDENED CONCRETE IS BOTH JUSTIFIED AND VALUABLE. THE SECOND PART DESCRIBES A NEW METHOD-OR MORE STRICTLY THE BASIS OF SEVERAL POSSIBLE METHODS-FOR ANALYSIS OF FRESH CONCRETE: METHODS BY WHICH THE AUTHORS CLAIM TO PROVIDE, ON SITE, EFFECTIVE QUALITY-CONTROL DATA WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF SAMPLING.
