WATER LEAKAGE AT FORM TIES

LEAKAGE OF WATER AT FORM TIES THROUGH A WALL MAY BE CAUSED BY SETTLEMENT OF CONCRETE AS IT SHRINKS RATHER THAN (AS FREQUENTLY SUPPOSED) BY CARELESS PLACING OF CONCRETE. TESTS IN ENGLAND SEEM TO SHOW THAT WATER COLLECTING UNDER A RIGIDLY FIXED FORM TIE, ESPECIALLY NEAR THE TOP OF A HIGH POUR, MAY FORM A CAVITY THAT WILL PERMIT SEEPAGE. ABOUT HALF OF 283 CONSULTANTS AND CONTRACTORS QUERIED REPORTED THIS WAS NO PROBLEM. ONLY A FEW SAID IT WAS COMMON. ABOUT HALF ALSO PREFERRED TO USE WATER STOPS ON THE TIES. /ASCE/
