THE EVALUATION OF TESTS WITH THE AID OF REGRESSION AND CORRELATION CALCULUS

WITH REGRESSION AND CORRELATION CALCULUS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE RELIABLE EVALUATION OF TEST RESULTS AND SPOT CHECKS WITH ONLY A SMALL NUMBER OF OBSERVATIONS. ASSOCIATED WITH EACH VALUE OF THE OBSERVED VARIABLE, A BASIC TOTALITY OF DEPENDENT VARIABLES CAN BE CONCEIVED. THE MEAN VALUES OF THESE BASIC TOTALITIES ARE LOCATED ON THE REGRESSION LINES. IF THE QUESTION CHOSEN FOR THE TEST TO ANSWER CAN BE REVERSED, THE TERM CORRELATION IS EMPLOYED. THERE ARE, IN THAT CASE, TWO REGRESSION LINES WHICH ARE SITUATED CLOSER TOGETHER ACCORDING AS THE CHARACTERISTICS ARE MORE RIGOROUSLY INTERRELATED. THE COURSE OF THE REGRESSION LINES BECOMES AFFECTED BY ERROR ONLY IF CERTAIN GROUPS OF VALUES OF THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE ARE ARBITRARILY LEFT OUT OF ACCOUNT IN THE CALCULATION. THE REGRESSION LINES ARE VALID ONLY FOR THE RANGE IN WHICH THE EXPERIMENTALLY DETERMINED VALUES ARE LOCATED, THEY MUST NOT BE EXTRAPOLATED. THE EQUATIONS WHICH ARE PRESENTED FOR THE REGRESSION LINES, THE DISPERSIONS, AND THE CONFIDENCE RANGES ARE VALID ONLY FOR LINEAR REGRESSION. IN MANY CASES, THE RANGE OF APPLICATION OF THE METHOD CAN BE EXTENDED BY PLOTTING THE MEASURED POINTS IN A COORDINATE SYSTEM WITH A LOGARITHMIC SCALE.
