TAMING THE SANDS OF CAM RANH

IN ORDER TO PROVIDE ROADS ON UNSTABLE SAND IN THE CAM RANH PENINSULA OF VIETNAM, 8 TEST SECTIONS WERE CONSTRUCTED FOR STABILIZATION METHODS TESTING. OF THESE STABILIZATION METHODS, THE TEST SECTIONS ACCEPTABLE FOR HEAVILY TRAVELED ROADS INCLUDED THOSE OF SAND WITH CEMENT /WHEN OVERLAID WITH A BITUMINOUS SURFACE TREATMENT/, CORAL WITH CEMENT, CORAL FINES WITH CRUSHED CORAL, AND DECOMPOSED GRANITE WITH CEMENT. FOR LIGHTLY TRAVELED AREAS THE COMBINATIONS THAT WERE ACCEPTABLE INCLUDED SAND WITH BEACH SAND AND ASPHALT, SAND WITH QUARRY SCREENINGS AND ASPHALT, AND CORAL WITH CEMENT. A TEST SECTION OF SAND WITH ASPHALT FAILED COMPLETELY.
