JACKS INSTALL BIG SEWER FOOTAGE

HEAVY CONCRETE PIPE TOTALING OVER HALF-MILE IN LENGTH IS BEING JACKED INTO PLACE IN DES MOINES, IOWA. JACKING WAS ELECTED BY THE CONTRACTORS AS THE CHEAPEST METHOD FOR GETTING THE BIG PIPE INTO POSITION. THE STATE PERMITTED THE CONTRACTOR TO SUBSTITUTE JACKING FOR OPEN-TRENCH LAYING AT THE OPEN-TRENCH PRICE. HYDRAULIC JACKS OF 500 TONS PRESSURE WERE REQUIRED.
