STABILITY OF CURVED PLATE GIRDERS-P2

THIS REPORT IS THE SECOND PART OF AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON THE STRENGTH OF HORIZONTALLY CURVED STEEL GIRDERS WITH THIN-WALLED OPEN SECTIONS. INCLUDED ARE RESULTS FROM SIX STATIC LOAD TESTS CONDUCTED ON TWO HORIZONTALLY CURVED, WELDED PLATE GIRDER SPECIMENS. EACH SPECIMEN WAS 15 FEET LONG WITH A DOUBLY SYMMETRIC CROSS-SECTION HAVING 6 X 3/8 IN. FLANGES FLAME CUT OT A NOMINAL RADIUS OF 50 FEET AND AN 18 IN. DEEP WEB SHEARED FROM 11 GAGE SHEET MATERIAL. FULLDEPTH TRANSVERSE WEB STIFFENERS WERE USED ON ONE SPECIMEN WHILE THE OTHER HAD CUT-SHORT STIFFERERS THEREBY ALLOWING A COMPARISON OF STIFFENER TYPES AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON BEHAVIOR. THE TESTS WERE DESIGNED TO INVESTIGATE THREE TYPES OF FAILURE MODES IN CURVED, OPEN-SECTION GIRDERS: 1) BENDING FAILURE IN A CONSTANT MOMENT REGION, 2) WEB BUCKLING FAILURE IN A REGION OF HIGH SHEAR AND 3) COMBINED BENDING AND SHEAR FAILURE. TESTS RESULTS ARE COMPARED TO CALCULATED RESULTS BASED ON SIMPLE ANALYTICAL METHODS. CONCLUSIONS ARE REACHED REGARDING THE INFLUENCE OF WARPING STRESSES AND STIFFENER TYPE ON THE STRENGTH AND BEHAVIOR OF CURVED PLATE GIRDERS. /FHWA/
