24 FT CONCRETE PAVER SPEEDS FREEWAY WORK

A SLIPFORM PAVING TRAIN WAS CONVERTED TO RUN ON SIDE FORMS LAYING A FULL 24-FT CONCRETE PAVEMENT. THE BASIC ADVANTAGE HERE IS THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS OF ONTARIO PERMITS MOST PAVEMENTS IN THE PROVINCE TO BE SLIPFORMED. THERE ARE ALSO ADVANTAGES IN LAYING A 24-FT WIDE PAVEMENT: (4) ONE SET OF SIDE FORMS IS ELIMINATED, (2) WAITING TIME BETWEEN CONSTRUCTION OF ADJACENT LANES IS ELIMINATED, (3) EQUIPMENT MOVES ARE CUT DOWN, (4) TRANSVERSE JOINTS CAN BE SAWED FOR THE FULL WIDTH OF 24 FT, AND SO TOTAL CUTTING TIME, INCLUDING EQUIPMENT MOVES, CAN BE SHORTENED, (5) FINE GRADING OPERATIONS CAN BE SPEEDED UP, BECAUSE THE MACHINES COVER THE 24-FT WIDTH IN ONE PASS, AND (6) ONE THIRD OF FORM GRADING IS CUT OUT. /CGRA/
