CITIES REPORT' UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION IN FRANKFURT A/M

THE CONSTRUCTION IS EXTENSIVELY BASED ON BERLIN EXPERIENCE. PLANNING IS DIRECTED TO THE TRAFFIC VOLUME OF 1980. UNDERGROUND AND STREET TRAMWAYS ARE SECTIONALLY COMBINED IN THE COURSE OF A THREE-STAGE CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME. THOROUGH PREPARATION, PARTICULAR CO-ORDINATION OF THE CONSTRUCTION SECTIONS ACCORDING TO SPOIL HANDLING, DEPLOYMENT OF PILING FACILITIES, ETC., ARE CONSIDERED PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT IN REGARD TO RATE OF PROGRESS AND COST; UNDER THE PROVISIONAL RAMPS FOR THE FIRST CONSTRUCTION SECTIONS, THE STUB ENDS FOR THE FUTURE CONTINUATION OF THE UNDERGROUND SYSTEM ARE ALREADY PROVIDED. THE FIRST CONSTRUCTION STAGE HAS ALREADY STARTED. SEPARATE TREATMENT IS GIVEN TO THE PROBLEMS OF PIPING AND CABLING, CONSTRUCTION BRIDGES, TUNNEL SEALING AND THE FINANCING OF THE WORK. IN THE FIRST CONSTRUCTION SECTION, THE CITY OF FRANKFURT WILL ENJOY A ONE THIRD SUBSIDY FROM THE LAND. EFFORTS TO PROCURE A FURTHER SUBSIDY OF ONE THIRD OF THE COST FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVE HITHERTO BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. /FG/RRL/
