SOME PROBLEMS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENTS FOR THE MITCHELL FREEWAY-PERTH, WA

RAPID URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN THE ENVIRONS OF PERTH HAVE NECESSITATED THE CONSTRUCTION OF A LARGE HIGHWAY INTERCHANGE TO THE NORTH OF THE NARROWS BRIDGE. ADDITIONAL LAND HAS TO BE RECLAIMED FROM THE RIVER SWAN AND HIGH EMBANKMENTS ARE TO BE CONSTRUCTED OVER DEEP, UNSTABLE MUD. THE INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE EXTENT AND NATURE OF THIS MUD, ITS CONSOLIDATION, THE STABILITY OF EMBANKMENTS, AND THE MEANS OF CONSTRUCTING THEM TOGETHER WITH THE FIRST STAGES OF RECLAMATION AND EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION ARE DESCRIBED. /RRL/A/
