ABILITY OF CLAY FILL TO SUPPORT CONSTRUCTION PLANT /PART/

A REALISTIC BASIS FOR A SPECIFICATION FOR EARTHWORK FILL IN GREAT BRITAIN WOULD BE FOR CLAY MATERIALS TO RELATE THE PLACEMENT LIMIT OF WET MATERIALS TO THE SHEAR STRENGTH REQUIREMENTS. LITTLE INFORMATION HAS BEEN PUBLISHED ON THE RELATION BETWEEN SHEAR STRENGTH, MOISTURE CONTENT AND DRY DENSITY OF DIFFERENT SOIL TYPES. REFERENCE IS MADE TO SOME INFORMATION ALREADY AVAILABLE AND TO ITS INADEQUACY ON THE REQUIRED POINTS. CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE ABILITY OF THE GROUND TO SUPPORT EARTH-MOVING PLANT, AND TO MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE TYRE CONTACT PRESSURE. GRAPHS ARE GIVEN FOR THE RELATION BETWEEN MOISTURE CONTENT AND PLASTIC LIMITS FOR VARIOUS SHEAR STRENGTHS AND THE RELATION BETWEEN MAXIMUM TYRE LOAD AND INFLATION PRESSURE FOR SOME TYPICAL TYRES ON EARTHMOVING EQUIPMENT. /RRL/
