ACCELERATED METHODS OF LIFE TESTING PAVEMENTS

THE REPORT DESCRIBES INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT UP TO THE PRESENT TIME BY MEANS OF SIMULATED LOADING TESTS, AND EVALUATES THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF METHODS CURRENTLY USED, INCLUDING METHODS OF PREDICTING PAVEMENT LIFE BY THEIR INITIAL PERFORMANCE. A SPECIAL CHAPTER IS DEVOTED TO THE ASSESSMENT OF PAVEMENT BEHAVIOUR EITHER IN TERMS OF THE DEFORMATION AND CRACKING OF THE SURFACING OR IN TERMS OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF THE PAVEMENT. THE CONCEPT OF PAVEMENT LIFE IS DISCUSSED AND DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE MOST IMPORTANT RESEARCH RESULTS. THE CONCLUSIONS SUMMARISE NATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES IN THIS AREA AND DRAW ATTENTION TO THE CLOSE INTERRELATION OF TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS. IT IS PROPOSED THAT MORE COMPREHENSIVE TEST EQUIPMENT THAN IS PRESENTLY AVAILABLE BE DEVELOPED TO KEEP PACE WITH THE EVOLUTION IN ROAD TRAFFIC AND THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND PAVEMENT DESIGN.
